The purpose of this study is to examine the educational capacity of Telegram instant messaging system. The study was conducted using descriptive/ survey methodology and is considered to be an applied research in terms of its objectives. Members of the National Library of the Islamic Republic of Iran comprise the statistical population of this study. Of 1,500 National Library members, a sample population of 305 people was obtained based on the Cochran Formula with 5% error. Questionnaires were distributed at the five main halls of the National Library-- i.e., Ibn Nadims Hall (referral and bibliography dept.), Razi (science and technology), Avicenna (humanities), Farabi (social sciences and art) and public library. Some 226 questionnaires were returned within 5 days and the library users were selected based on available sampling method.
The findings of the study showed that there is no significant relationship between the educational level and the field of study on the one hand and the variable of belief in educational capacities of Telegram, on the other. There is, however, a significant relationship between gender and educational use of Telegram, and females’ viewpoint on educational use of Telegram is more favorable.
Also, the research findings showed that the Telegram messaging service has provided a good opportunity to follow up "training"in Iran and according to the average obtained (3.76) in the calculations, the respondents wish to use this service in their scientific activities. For that reason, an ideal future can be expected for educational use of this medium. Therefore, necessary training should be provided in this area
