During the recent years, new approaches to journalism have taken shape, including citizen journalism, peace journalism, dialogue journalism, environment journalism and health journalism.
Here, activist journalism and utilization of alternative media have assumed a special status in development communication.
This paper intends to review the formation of this kind of journalism in Iran. Since the first instances of this kind of communication have occurred in the field of cultural heritage, this paper deals with the same subject. For starters, the course of evolution and formation of activist media and their status in the new media environment are reviewed, while relying on their communication foundations in the two important theories of the network society by Manuel Castells and participatory communication by Jan Servaes, where the concept of activist journalism has been explained. Then, the mechanism of mediatization of cultural heritage in Iran, part of which complied with activist and alternative journalism, has been studied and experts, specialists, journalists and activists in this field have been interviewed.
This research depicts the status quo and the ideal situation of activist journalism in the field of cultural heritage within the framework of two models by using grounded theory.
